Cooking Conversion Questions & Answers

Answers about grams per cup, teaspoons, butter, metric cups, ovens and recipe scaling.

How many tablespoons are in a US cup?

There are 16 US tablespoons in one US cup. Because there are three US teaspoons in a US tablespoon, there are 48 US teaspoons in one cup. The definition applies to volume, whether you are measuring water, oil or a dry ingredient.

Why does a cup of flour have different gram values online?

Measurement technique, flour variety, humidity and chart conventions differ. Spoon-and-level flour is lighter than flour compacted by scooping. We use a 120 g reference for all-purpose flour, but the weight specified by the recipe author should override a general-purpose calculator.

Can I convert any ingredient from cups to grams?

Not reliably without an ingredient-specific density or published weight. A cup of chopped vegetables, for example, may contain very different amounts of air space depending on cut size. Our tool covers selected ingredients and avoids treating a cup as a universal weight.

Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?

No. A US fluid ounce measures volume, about 29.574 mL. An avoirdupois ounce measures mass, about 28.350 g. They are numerically similar for some liquids but are not interchangeable units.

Does doubling a recipe double the cooking time?

Usually not. A larger batch may need a larger pan, longer heating or different stirring intervals, but the relationship is not linear. Use safe internal temperatures where appropriate and follow recipe-specific doneness cues.

What is the difference between a US and metric cup?

A customary US cup is about 236.588 mL; a metric cup is 250 mL. Our calculator uses the customary US cup and clearly labels it. When following an international recipe, confirm the recipe’s cup standard.

Should I change oven temperature for fan baking?

Many fan-assisted recipes use lower temperatures than conventional recipes, but there is no single adjustment that works for every oven and food. Check the recipe’s instructions and your appliance manual rather than treating a temperature conversion as a fan-oven recommendation.
